Tom Herman

CTO

Tom Herman is EcoClaim’s CTO and is focused on building products to facilitate the decarbonization of the Casualty Insurance Supply Chain. With over 20 years of experience in startups and product development, Tom’s career has spanned multiple industries, including environmental technology, carbon accounting, and trading. At EcoClaim, Tom is creating software that measures Scope 3 CO2 emissions in the insurance industry supply chain. EcoClaim’s Trax platform collects field data on construction debris and reconstruction materials, provides decarbonization recommendations, and integrates with most construction management platforms. By measuring emissions, diverting construction waste from landfill to recycling, EcoClaim makes decarbonization a cost reduction exercise instead of a cost center.

Tom began his journey in the carbon markets at AirCarbon Exchange in Singapore, where he built a Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) compliant carbon trading platform. He worked closely with various stakeholders, from buyers of carbon credits to the farmers and landowners producing credits and the MRV providers in between gaining a comprehensive understanding of the economics and data involved in pricing and trading carbon.

In his role as the co-founder of Meta Carbon, Tom developed carbon offset portfolio management tools including APIs and consumer applications such as shopping cart plugins, carbon footprint calculators, and decarbonization recommendation tools.

Tom is a frequent guest lecturer at top universities, including Ohio State, Dartmouth, Booth, and the National University of Singapore, where he shares his knowledge and passion for sustainability, technology and entrepreneurship. His career has taken him from Boston to Indonesia and various countries in between, Tom brings a global perspective to his work, but currently resides in Connecticut with his family.
